With Jaclyn aka Jackie aka Jac aka Renassiance Woman (more on that in a minute ;- ) we get a unique combination of graphic designer and educator. Jackie joined OneSeventeen Media after years of experience as an award winning media designer and serving four years in public education. For two years, her time was spent as a middle school English teacher with the nation’s prestigious Teach For America program in one of the lowest performing school districts in the nation, and two years at Warren New Tech High School in Warrenton, North Carolina, where she taught Digital Media classes and helped start the school. Her experience in Warren New Tech’s 1:1 technology driven classroom, teaching on a Project Based Learning platform she helped develop, has given Jackie an understanding of the educational and social impact of technology and media on today’s youth and their eagerness to explore, learn and create with it.
Through sharing her experience and best practices with educators and state administrators in workshops and lecture around the country, Jackie earned 21st Century Certified Educator status from the New Tech Foundation. Even though she is no longer in the classroom, Jackie continues to assist teachers to incorporate technology and Project Based Learning into their curriculum with the William and Ida Friday Institute of North Carolina.
Jackie holds a BFA in Media Arts and Design from State University of New York at Fredonia and her Secondary Teaching Certification from East Carolina Universtiy. When she is not managing the OneSeventeen Media and Young Minds Digital Times blogs, she also oversees and is lead content writer for KidThrive.org’s innovative “The Alien Lounge”. And if that’s not a full enough plate, she also is the Director of KidThrive’s Young Minds Digital Times Film and Game Competition. Thanks to her classroom experience, Jackie has unique insight into teen minds and she is intrigued by innovative methods of facilitating relationships between kids, parents and mentors. She continues to stay in touch with many of her students, and enjoys checking up on them via Facebook and MySpace. (And if any of them are reading this, clean up your profiles!)
In 2000, Jackie started her own award winning media design studio which continues operation in the wee hours around everything else currently providing pro bono print and digital marketing material services for local nonprofit organizations.
Now for “page two” of the Renaissance Woman part of her story --
If you know what SteamPunk is then you get a gold star! If you attend Renaissance Festivals and can pick Jackie out from the 16th Century (hint: check her pictures out on her Facebook page) then you get another gold star! When Jackie is not working her day job, she’s enjoying two of her first loves; acting and singing. She is a regular and recognized performer for the North Carolina Historic Interpretations, Inc. and Royal Faire’s Carolina Renaissance Festival and has been in countless stage and improv productions in both North Carolina and New York. She also has an affinity for Irish and Celtic music which she sings with a local group. Wow! This lassie has energy!
